All employers are recommended to have a formal written statement regarding stress and mental health problems in the workplace. This Stress Policy should include, stress risk assessment, policies for promoting mental well-being, preventing workplace stress and what to do if problems are experienced.
To allow employers to comply with the HSE Management Standard, they define a protocol and questionnaire for carrying out a workplace stress risk assessment.
  • Identify each of the six risk factors.
  • Decide where risks are present and who may be harmed.
  • Evaluate the risk, identify best practice and stress hot spots.
  • Record the findings and develop action plans.
  • Monitor and review progress.
While actions to manage the adverse consequences of stress in individuals are a valuable component of a stress policy, the risk assessment should focus on identifying the root causes of stress.
